Equipment List

Unlike some other shooting activities, precision rifle training is gear-intensive.  We want you to spend more time learning and less time fighting your gear.  For best results in this class, we recommend sticking as close as possible to these recommendations:

  • A bolt-action or semi-automatic centerfire rifle in a medium caliber such as .223 Remington, .308 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, .30-06, or similar caliber.   We advise against magnums or cartridges exceeding 3200 FPS in this class (e.g. .204 Ruger, 6.5 PRC, .220 Swift, etc…).  Rifles should have a free-floating heavier profile barrel, (lightweight hunting or carbine-type barrels are not recommended, they won’t hold accuracy over strings of fire).
  • Optics need to be mounted with strong rings and mounts, low enough to get a comfortable cheek weld on the stock. A quality conventional scope with finger-adjustable knobs and a simple reticle (such as mil-dot or mil-hash) is strongly recommended.  Scopes should be capable of at least 8X magnification or more. We will teach you to use what you have, and students have performed well in this class with a variety of optics, however, Mil/Mil optics seem to give people less trouble than other optics types in this class. It is recommended your rifle also be equipped with a sturdy bipod, tall enough for you to comfortably shoot from the prone position. There are a multitude of options available and setting up a precision rifle can be confusing. Please contact us prior to class with your rifle specifications if you have any questions.
  • Ammunition – 100 rounds of quality match grade ammunition. (This class will involve shooting at steel targets, please do not bring steel jacketed, steel core – A.K.A. green tip, armor piercing, tracer, incendiary or other exotic ammunition types).  Hunting ammo (soft-point) or NATO-spec ammo like M80 ball or M193 doesn’t usually give the best accuracy.  Best results are obtained with Boat-Tail Hollow Point (BTHP) projectiles like the Sierra Match King or polymer tip rounds like the Hornady AMAX or ELD-M.   If you need ammo, contact us ASAP and our Armory may be able to help you out.
  • Shooting Mat (can be improvised with packing blankets or a camping ground pad).
  • Personal Protective Equipment: Hearing protection (muffs, plugs, or both), and eye protection (ANSI Z.87 or MilSpec strongly recommended)
  • Water, lunch, snacks
  • Weather Gear/appropriate clothing – sturdy clothing, rain/sun gear and sunscreen as necessary
  • Other range gear as desired (mag loaders, spotting scope, tools, etc…)
