WILDLIFE PROTECTION

I get asked a lot about using firearms, specifically handguns, for defending against animal attacks like bear or mountain lion. Statistically, a can of bear spray is more successful typically than firearms for defending against animals. Pepper spray works very quickly whereas bullets take time to work. Bullets must hit a vital central nervous system organ or a major blood vessel. While a brain hit can be instantly fatal, it is a small, well-protected, and mobile target. Body shots must rely on the bullet penetrating the fur and thick hide to reach a major vein or artery to cause enough bleeding to render the attacking animal unconscious. Standard hollowpoint rounds that have adequate penetration on 2-legged targets, may not have enough penetration on critters with thick fur and tough hides.
One of the more popular ammunition brands for protection from dangerous animals is Buffalo Bore. Their "outdoorsman" line features heavy, hard-cast lead bullets with penetration capability measured in feet instead of inches.
In Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming, however, where I do most of my hiking now, we have grizzly, moose, bison and other large animals that can be extremely dangerous; aggressive and difficult to stop. While pepper spray is still a viable tool, scaling up to a more powerful caliber with deep-penetrating bullets is a consideration in these areas.
In New Mexico's Jemez Mountains (for example), my old stomping grounds, mountain lion and black bear are potential threats, even though attacks are relatively rare. For these threats, pepper spray, light rifle rounds, and common defensive handgun rounds should typically be effective.
The best protection is still exercising awareness and good outdoors practices to avoid stumbling into or attracting dangerous wildlife. Some wildlife is also protected and injuring or killing them, even in self-defense, incurs consequences. If it's a matter of life and death, of course defend yourself, but don't take pot-shots at animals passing by that don't present a bona-fide threat. Appreciate them from a distance and, as they say in Yellowstone: "don't pet the fluffy cows."
There are still some handguards and gas blocks available in carbine, midlength, and rifle length. I can also supply assembled complete uppers equipped with these if you like. Send me an email if you are looking for a complete upper receiver assembly.

If you have been paying attention, you will know that The United States House Judiciary Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government has uncovered that the FBI has been conducting financial surveillance on gun and ammo purchasers, as well as individuals who disagreed with the vaccine mandates, President Trump supporters, Christians, and other groups with values contrary to the current political elites. This surveillance, and compiling a database and profiles of US citizens is, of course, completely unconstitutional, not to mention highly unethical. The hearings on this are largely theater, indignation and strong words but no actions taken to stop this violation of our privacy or to censure those who are sponsoring, conducting, or permitting this surveillance. Since all of us, or almost all of us, have purchased firearms from FFL's or purchased firearms, ammunition, accessories, or parts online, you are probably on this list. When a government makes a list of people with particular values or ideals, what do you think that list eventually gets used for? Food for thought.
