MID-MAY UPDATE

Designated Marksman Rifle Class is coming up in a few weekends on May 31 at Fremont County Sportsman's Club in Saint Anthony, Idaho. This class incorporates skills from both carbine and precision rifle, as well as some things that are unique to Designated Marksman type rifles. Designed to test both the shooter and the equipment, this class involves engaging modest-sized targets from muzzle-contact to 300 yards in field shooting positions and compressed time frames.

For this class, I recommend rifles with at least a 16-inch barrel and a low power variable optic such as a 1X-6X or 2X to 10X. Match ammo is highly recommended - something like a 69 grain Sierra. Round count is approximately 300. If you need ammo for this class, I have a supply of Norma Golden Target ammo available at a discounted rate.

I find this class to be one of the more practical classes for armed citizen and law enforcement rifle shooters, it is both physically and mentally challenging and addresses realistic situations for patrol rifle, hunting, and home defense.

LEGAL UPDATE

A recent settlement between gun rights groups and the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has led to a major shift in the regulation of Forced Reset Triggers (FRTs). The agreement, signed on May 16, 2025, ensures that the DOJ will not enforce the National Firearms Act machine gun ban against FRTs and will return all previously seized devices to their owners.
This settlement follows a Supreme Court ruling in Cargill v. Garland that found the ATF had exceeded its authority in classifying bump stocks as machine guns. A lower court later applied this ruling to FRTs, concluding that they also could not be classified as machine guns.
Under the settlement, Rare Breed Triggers, a company involved in litigation over FRTs, agreed to certain conditions, including not developing FRTs for pistols and enforcing patents to prevent unsafe designs. The DOJ emphasized that the agreement enhances public safety while respecting Second Amendment rights.

Both the Hearing Protection Act (HPA) and the Stop Harassing Owners of Rifles Today (SHORT) Act are currently stalled in the House Ways and Means Committee.
  • The HPA (H.R. 404) aims to remove suppressors from the National Firearms Act (NFA), eliminating the $200 tax stamp and treating suppressors like regular firearms.
  • The SHORT Act (H.R. 2395) seeks to remove short-barreled rifles (SBRs) from the NFA, reducing restrictions on their ownership.
You can contact the House Ways and Means Committee to express your support for the Hearing Protection Act (HPA) and SHORT Act through the following methods:
📞 Phone: (202) 225-3625
🌐 Website: Ways and Means Committee
You can also reach out to individual committee members directly. Their contact details are available on the committee's members page.
Additionally, consider writing to your own representative in Congress to encourage them to support these bills. You can find their contact information using the Find Your Representative tool.

Remind your representatives to keep the promises they made to gun owners by passing these two acts!
