SCOPED RIFLE ELEMENTS

Scoped Rifle Elements class is coming up at the end of this month at Fremont County Sportsman's Club in St. Anthony, Idaho. I have room for 2 or 3 more in this class. If you are interested, I recommend signing up ASAP!
This class is perfect for the rifle hunter, competitive shooter, defensive marksman, or anyone wanting to develop their scoped rifle knowledge and skill.
Precision rifle classes are typically 2-3 days minimum, and as long as 5-10 days. Fitting this information into a 1-day class was a bit of a challenge. Like the other ADC classes this year, this class has been completely revamped to ensure the information is up-to-date and efficiently delivered. The new class manual contains over 40-pages of information, and the class has been reorganized to maximize time on the rifle.

SETTING UP SCOPED RIFLES & OPTICS

One of the biggest challenges I see in EVERY class, is people fighting their gear. Improperly configured or adjusted gear is a major obstacle. To set people up for success in this class, I put together a few videos and articles that help get gear squared away, and I thought I might share this information with subscribers to this newsletter while I am at it!

ADJUSTABLE STOCKS

A lot of adjustable stocks are available and most of them don't come with any instructions on a logical process to configure them. THIS ARTICLE helps walk shooters through the recommended stock setup and adjustment process. In addition, I've recorded a quick video guide that you can watch covering the same information. Click HERE to watch.

OPTICS MOUNTING

If you have your optics mounted by the local gun shop, they are probably mounting them for a standing shooting position, which might not give you the most comfort or ability to use the optic in a prone or benchrest shooting position. Once you have your stock correctly adjusted, I recommend you verify your eye relief (the distance between the ocular lens of the scope and your shooting eye) to make sure you don't have too much, or too little room. THIS VIDEO is a few years old, but it's still a great guide on mounting optics.

PREPARING FOR A PRECISION RIFLE CLASS

Lastly, here is a quick guide to what you should bring to a precision rifle class and a few other helpful tips you can use to prepare. Being well-prepared will help you get the most out of a precision rifle class.

MILS OR MOA?

Rifle optics use units of angular measure for adjustment. The 2 units typically used are minutes of angle (MOA) or milliradians (MILs). Understanding these scales helps shooters know how to adjust their sights, and also how to use the reticle of their scope to measure targets to determine their approximate distance, as well as holdover points for elevation and wind.

MINUTES OF ANGLE (MOA)

Are based on degrees. There are 360 degrees in a circle. If one of those degrees was divided into 60 equal portions, those portions would be "minutes" of angle (MOA).
Minutes of angle subtend 1.047 inches at 100 yards. "Shooters MOA" simplifies this to 1 inch per 100 yards. So adjusting the sights 1 MOA, means the bullet impact should move 1 inch on a target 100 yards away. That same 1 MOA adjustment would move the point of impact 2 inches on a 200 yard target, 3 inches on a 300 yard target, and so on.

MILLIRADIANS (MILs)

Milliradians are based on radians. 1 radian is an arc-segment of a circle that is the same length as the radius (from the center to the edge) of a circle. A "milli-radian" is 1/1000 of a radian.
1 milliradian subtends an arc of 3.6" at 100 yards or 36 inches (1 yard) at 1000 yards.

Milliradians are not particular to metric or imperial units of measure and can be used with either. 1 milliradian subtends 1 yard at 100 yards or 1 meter at 1000 meters.
Both systems work, and largely it is a matter of personal preference. I was a dedicated "MOA" shooter for decades till I tried out MILs. MILs made such an impression on me I switched everything that way and never turned back. My personal view on it is that the numbers stay smaller when calculating mils, and they are based on 1/10ths which I find easier to calculate.

SECOND AMENDMENT

While left- vs right-wing politics shouldn't have any impact on constitutionally-guaranteed rights, unfortunately, it does. Plato is credited with the statement that 'One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors.' As much as I would like to never discuss politics in these newsletters, the right to keep an bear arms is constantly threatened by political agendas. With Joe Biden withdrawing from the race and support being thrown in behind Kamala Harris, this should be a concern to every gun owner. VP Harris is as radically anti-gun as it gets, and has promised executive action on firearms. Since her nomination, she has calmed-down some of her most radical anti-gun rhetoric, but the leopard doesn't change its spots. She wants "assault weapons" bans, red-flag laws, universal background checks, illegal lists of gun owners, and a weakened or very liberal supreme court that won't have the ability or desire to stand in the way. If the right to keep and bear arms is important to you, please consider this thoroughly before casting your vote this November.
